discovery lodge

a development for discovery lodge sited in the middle of the wild and pristine central plateau taking in the stunning views of volcanoes - ngarahoe, ruapehu and tongariro.  certainly one of the most spectacular locations where a sympathetic design approach is required to harmonise with this unique landscape. an alpine sensibility is required where an altitude of 1000m means that snow is a possibility for 3 months of the year.

the map right side shows the site location.  the central plateau in the middle of the north island.  whakapapa village is at the base of mt ruapehu and mangatapopo road is the start of the famous tongariro crossing one day walk.  the state highway 47 road takes you on to taupo and state highway 4 (left side) runs between taumaranui and wanganui.

discovery lodge - the project

new facilities are currently being designed and will include: a luxury lodge, luxury chalets and restaurant with ski hire facilities attached.  first stage is to prepare the resource consent and work hard to make sure there is minimum impact on the surrounding natural beauty.  the units will each take in the stunning views of the mountains that dominate the landscape here and that bring so many people to this area.  Existing facilities will be upgraded progressively over time and include the current restaurant, lounge, and a mixture of motel and chalet units.
